- Whilst great care was taken during the compilation of this list and the retrieval program, there are over 3500 names in the database and inevitably some mistakes will have crept in. No responsibilty can be accepted for any errors contained herein.
- The date range covered varies from company to company, but it roughly spans 1900-1980. Gaps will be filled as and when.
- The numbers listed are BR number if received while named, or grouping number if not or if completely different. Several numbers does not mean several locomotives! (See note 7)
- L&NWR locomotives are identified by their first LM&SR number. In some cases the locomotive was withdrawn before ever carrying the allocated number.
- London Tilbury & Southend locomotives are identified by their LT&SR number as the names were removed c1912 after being absorbed by the Midland.
- A handful of Caledonian and Highland locomotives had their name removed when repainted into LMS livery. The number shown is the LMS number.
- For instance, City of London,(W)3716(3439)/(M)5461(978)/46245/(E)5427/61670/(B)87005, means the name was carried by:
- GWR number 3716, formerly 3439, City class (Same locomotive, renumbered)
- LMS 5461, formerly 978, ex LNWR Experiment
- LMS(BR) 46245, Coronation class
- LNER 5427, GCR Class 1 (LNER B2)
- LNER(BR) 61670, B17
